Babcock University Disowns Alleged Honorary Certificate, Warns Public Against Fake Academic Documents

Babcock University has issued a public notice distancing itself from an alleged honorary academic certificate that has been circulating online and attributed to the institution. In the statement, the university categorically declared that the document is false, unauthorized, and does not originate from Babcock University.

According to the notice dated June 29, 2026, the university said its attention was drawn to fraudulent documents being circulated by individuals claiming to possess honorary certificates and academic distinctions allegedly issued by the institution.

One of the documents specifically mentioned in the notice is a purported "Honorary Certificate" allegedly awarded by the Babcock University Biochemistry Computer Club to Oderhohwo Joseph Efe for achieving a "First Class Upper." The university stated that the document is not authentic and has no connection to its official academic system.

Babcock University emphasized that it does not issue honorary certificates in recognition of undergraduate academic performance. It explained that students who graduate with outstanding academic records receive official recognition only through the university's degree certificate and academic transcript issued by the Office of the Registrar.

The institution also clarified that the academic classification referred to as "First Class Upper" does not exist within its grading system. Instead, the officially recognized classification is "First Class Honours."

In its public advisory, the university urged employers, educational institutions, professional bodies, government agencies, and members of the public to disregard any academic certificate or honorary document purportedly issued by Babcock University outside its established academic procedures.

Furthermore, the university warned that anyone found producing, presenting, circulating, or using forged academic documents to obtain employment, admission, professional recognition, immigration benefits, or any other advantage may face investigation and prosecution under applicable laws relating to forgery, fraud, and falsification of academic records.

The statement also noted that Babcock University reserves the right to institute both civil and criminal proceedings against any individual, group, or organization found unlawfully using or misrepresenting the university's name or academic credentials.

The notice serves as a reminder of the growing concerns surrounding certificate fraud and academic credential falsification. Institutions across Nigeria have continued to strengthen verification processes to protect the integrity of their qualifications and maintain public confidence in higher education.

Prospective employers, admission officers, and organizations are encouraged to verify academic credentials directly through official university channels before relying on submitted certificates.
