INEC Chairman Pledges Reforms Ahead of 2027 Elections, Warns of Challenges

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has outlined its plans and reforms in preparation for the 2027 general elections, with Chairman Prof. Joash Amupitan emphasizing the commission’s commitment to credible elections while cautioning that no election can ever be entirely perfect.

Speaking at a Citizens’ Town Hall Meeting, Prof. Amupitan addressed concerns over election integrity, transparency, and operational challenges. He noted that while INEC is implementing reforms and technology-driven solutions, certain logistical and operational constraints across the country will remain significant hurdles.

“Our goal is to ensure elections are transparent, timely, and as credible as possible. However, we cannot promise a 100% perfect election because challenges are inevitable in a country of this size and diversity,” the INEC Chairman stated.

A major focus of INEC under Prof. Amupitan’s leadership is the electronic transmission of election results. The commission aims to use technology to reduce delays, minimize errors, and improve public confidence in reported results. This comes after lessons learned from previous elections, where manual processes were criticized for delays and occasional discrepancies.

The INEC Chairman also highlighted ongoing engagement with citizens, stakeholders, and political parties as a key component of reform. By fostering open dialogue, the commission hopes to address concerns proactively and maintain a stable democratic process. “We urge Nigerians to participate actively and understand that electoral improvements are a process, not an instant solution,” Prof. Amupitan added.

Experts believe that while technological interventions can significantly enhance transparency, long-term trust in elections also depends on consistent adherence to electoral laws, voter education, and impartial enforcement of rules. Analysts say that INEC’s willingness to acknowledge challenges publicly is a positive step toward building confidence in the system.

Public reactions to the announcement have been mixed. Many citizens welcomed the commitment to reforms and increased transparency, while others expressed concern that technological solutions may not fully resolve issues in remote or underserved regions. Nonetheless, the government’s focus on preparing ahead of the 2027 elections signals a proactive approach to strengthening democratic institutions.

Prof. Amupitan has been serving as INEC Chairman since October 2025, taking over from Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, who completed two terms. Under his tenure, INEC is expected to continue modernizing election processes, engaging citizens, and implementing reforms that could shape Nigeria’s political landscape for years to come.
