Chaos at Children’s Day Celebration as Tear Gas Reportedly Disrupts Event in Edo

Confusion and Panic Around Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium

What was meant to be a joyful Children’s Day celebration in Benin City reportedly turned chaotic after security operatives allegedly fired tear gas around the premises of the famous Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, causing panic among children, parents, and spectators.

According to eyewitness accounts circulating on social media, the incident happened during activities marking the 2026 Children’s Day celebration in Edo State. Videos and online posts showed large crowds running in confusion as smoke spread around parts of the stadium environment.

Children who had gathered in colorful uniforms and costumes for the annual celebration were seen being hurried away by teachers and parents as fear spread through the area. Some witnesses claimed the situation created tension and interrupted several scheduled activities.

At the time of reporting, there has been no official confirmation from the Nigeria Police Force or the Edo State Government explaining exactly what led to the reported use of tear gas or whether the action was directly connected to the Children’s Day event itself.

The stadium, one of the biggest sporting and event centers in Edo State, has long been used for major public celebrations, football matches, and government ceremonies.

Social media reactions have continued to pour in, with many Nigerians expressing anger and disappointment over reports that children were exposed to such a frightening situation on a day dedicated to celebrating young people. Others called for authorities to investigate the incident and ensure better crowd management during public events.
Children’s Day is traditionally celebrated across Nigeria every May 27 with parades, cultural displays, music, and educational activities aimed at promoting the welfare and rights of children. In Edo State, events are often hosted at major venues including the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium.

As of now, no casualties or serious injuries have been officially reported. However, concerned citizens are demanding clarity from security agencies and state officials over the circumstances surrounding the disruption.

The incident has once again sparked conversations about crowd control, public safety, and the conduct of security personnel during civilian gatherings in Nigeria.

More updates are expected as authorities respond to the growing public attention surrounding the incident.
