Nigeria’s telecommunications industry has welcomed a new player as Lebara Nigeria officially begins nationwide commercial operations, offering Nigerians another option for mobile voice, SMS and internet services.
The London-based telecommunications brand commenced commercial operations in September 2026, entering Nigeria through the country’s growing Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO) market.
LEBARA ENTERS NIGERIA AS AN MVNO
Unlike traditional telecom operators such as MTN, Airtel and Glo, Lebara does not operate by building its own nationwide radio network.
Instead, the company operates as an MVNO, using existing telecommunications infrastructure while focusing on its own services, customer experience, distribution and digital products.
Lebara Nigeria operates through VAS2Nets Telecommunications Limited, which holds a Tier 5 MVNO licence issued by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC). The NCC's records identify VAS2Nets as the licence holder trading under the Lebara Nigeria brand.
Lebara's Nigerian operation is connected to Airtel Nigeria's network infrastructure, allowing the new operator to provide mobile services without having to build a separate nationwide network.
Physical SIM and eSIM available
Customers can obtain Lebara SIM cards through participating retail locations and registered agents.
The company is also offering eSIMs, giving compatible smartphone users the option to activate mobile services digitally without requiring a physical SIM card.
Lebara has introduced remote Know Your Customer (KYC) registration through its My LebaraNG application, allowing customers to complete onboarding digitally.
WHAT SERVICES WILL LEBARA OFFER?
Lebara's initial Nigerian services include:
Mobile data
Voice calls
SMS
Physical SIM cards
eSIM services
Digital customer onboarding
Self-service account management
Cloud storage and other digital services
The company is positioning its Nigerian operation around digital-first customer service and accessibility.
A new competitor in Nigeria's telecom market
Lebara's arrival adds another brand to Nigeria's increasingly competitive telecommunications sector.
Nigeria's MVNO framework was created to allow companies to provide mobile services without necessarily owning and operating a complete nationwide mobile network. The NCC has issued MVNO licences under its regulatory framework, although only a small number of operators have so far moved into commercial operations.
Lebara follows Vitel Wireless, which became the first commercial MVNO to launch under Nigeria's current framework in 2025.
The launch means Nigerian consumers now have another mobile-service provider to consider, particularly as competition increasingly extends beyond traditional calls and SMS to data services, eSIMs and digital customer experiences.
LEBARA'S NIGERIAN JOURNEY
Lebara and VAS2Nets announced their brand partnership in 2024, while the company subsequently introduced its 0724 number range as part of preparations for its Nigerian launch.
The company also held a soft launch in Lagos in February 2026 before moving to nationwide commercial availability in September.
Lebara's parent brand says it was established in 2001 and has operated as an MVNO in several international markets. Its official company information lists Nigeria among markets where the Lebara brand is licensed.
WHAT NIGERIANS SHOULD KNOW
Lebara's launch does not mean the company has built a completely independent mobile network across Nigeria. As an MVNO, its underlying connectivity depends on its host network arrangement.
For consumers, the major differences are therefore likely to come through the services, pricing, digital experience, customer support and additional products offered by Lebara.
With the new operator now commercially available nationwide, Nigeria's telecom market enters another phase in the development of its MVNO sector.
